Get A Plant For A Healthy Home In 2012

Starting 2012 off thinking about what to do to bring beauty and health into our lives! Start with some plants! Just added this Boston Fern to my bedroom....it is a start! Read below about benefits of doing the same~

Houseplants are our often-overlooked helpers in ridding the air of pollutants and toxins, counteracting outgassing and contributing to balanced internal humidity.

It is suggested that one plant should be allowed for approximately 10 square yards of floor space, assuming average ceiling heights of 8 to 9 feet. This means that you need two or three plants to contribute to good air quality in the average domestic living room of about 20 to 25 square yards.

Just a side note: Desperately needed dresser...settled on this metal dresser from Restoration Hardware (feel like I am always settling with my choices!). Lamp is a family antique. Just received the mirror from One Kings Lane, not happy with it! Looked better in picture. This may be last time I order online without seeing it first (actually my daughter needed a mirror in her room, so away it went and now looking for something else)!

Simple Door Decorations

I think having urns in front of your door is a must! My husband always wants to put these away for the winter but look how much charm they add to this wintery scene! Just beautiful in my opinion! Here I have just a simple wreath and added a red bow. In the planters are small Christmas trees that last forever through every season.

Last year during many snow storms!

This year, I decided to add two red bows to the trees. I think it looks very cute and this was extrememly easy!

Last year's decorations for our front door... I really love how my planters turned out! Again, urns are a must for front door entrance. A good investment and when the black finish wears out, you can spray paint them to bring them back to life!

Decorating My Staircase For Christmas

I said I would post more pictures as I go along with my decorating so here it is! I am not 100% in love with this but have always wanted to have greenery on my railing so decided to go for it! Festive enough. I had the bows made at a local florist and my daughter added the little silver ornaments for a sparkly touch. That is all for today!

How Our Home Is Shaping Up For Christmas!

Just a quick peek at what I have been up to at our house. "It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas!" Yes, I kicked into gear this weekend and started my Christmas decorating. I usually don't get it done in one day and like to improve upon things and fiddle a little bit too {don't have our tree yet}. I am very happy with my mantel except for the short stubby {used} candlesticks. I have to replace those {don't look}. I bought a long swag of pine about 25 feet and used most on my staircase-which will be another post- and cut off the end to drape across the mantel. I would say a very simple decoration with a great effect. Really says Christmas to me. I tucked in some glittered pine cones that my daughter decorated years ago and voila! Done!

Picked up a bunch of local Winterberry...stuck it in a vintage silver vase {which seriously needs polishing} dragged out a beautiful red and white plate {from Home Goods} and again...simply done!

OK...I love this display in my kitchen...I found a silver teapot and added some simple greenery just draping over the sides. Tea pot was $10.00 in a thrift store {a great find}. The small milk cup was also a score for $5.00 too! I love the combination!

Found this little stone bust and just had to have it.

Trying out my vintage cloche with some ornaments that I have had forever. Not sure if this will stay that way or maybe will only use one color scheme. See...my decorating is still a work in progress!

Just another fun little vignette that I had fun putting together. Simple.

Oh and I cannot forget the delish chocolate chip pancakes that my daughter made to start the weekend decorating off right! So festive!

I will be posting more as I continue. Hope you find some inspiration here! I am off to find some battery operated candlesticks for all of my windows {I don't want to see wires...a big no-no!}

Decorating Simply For Christmas...Can It Be Done?

OK, so it is not December 1...yet! Once again, I am in panic mode about my Christmas decorating. I am definitely not the type to have my tree up right after Thanksgiving or my outside Christmas lights! This is the point where I ask myself "Why can't I keep it simple?". The image above evokes how simple things can be. A swag of evergreens just draped across a mantle. You know what I also think about when I look at this "easy" decoration? That I actually have to drag myself to the store to find it! I will though even if it can be tiring... all for the sake of keeping it simple! In the end, it is all fun and worth it! I love this time of year and enjoy when I finally get up to speed and get it together. There is always next year to start earlier, right?

This is such a cozy room. Just the right amount of decorating here. Love how the Christmas Tree glows!

I would never use a white Christmas Tree...just would not look right in my home. However, the white tree just adds the right amount of sparkle to this rustic home.

Well, there is something to be said for keeping it simple! Now, should I drag out all my Christmas nutcrackers? Maybe not!

What I Am Watching Now-love it!

Case Histories on PBS

Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter, The Patriot) stars as private investigator Jackson Brodie, the tough former soldier and policeman with a heart of gold, in this series based on the acclaimed novels by Kate Atkinson. Brodie, haunted by a past family tragedy, struggles to balance his personal and professional life while coming to the rescue of the bereaved, the lost and the dysfunctional in the Scottish city of Edinburgh.

I am so into this series on PBS! I highly recommend watching it. You can also start with the first one by viewing it online at pbs.org. Jason Isaacs is perfect as the character Jackson Brodie. He is a strong, instinctive private detective yet he cares about the people he ends up helping...very sensitive! He always does the right thing! Love it!

If you like the strong/sensitive type...then you have to watch! Enjoy!

BOO-lated Happy Halloween!

A little snapshot of a Halloween that just didn't get my full attention this year. Actually started putting up the decorations right as trick-or-treaters were coming up the block around 7 p.m.! Well, there were some little ones that came before that and they missed out on the full effect, which was not much! I shouldn't beat myself up (which I am) about not getting into this year. The fact that we had a winter storm here did not help. Tree came down across the street and we were without power. As you can see in photo above, there is snow on the ground! Yikes, going to be a long winter!

Pictures above and below are some of my better decorating years (last year). So glad I took pictures!

This was my best inside decoration this year. Found this rather large cinderella pumpkin (my husband just didn't get my attraction to this) for $6.99 at Whole Foods. Well, hope everyone had a great Halloween! I can never look at a piece of candy again! My daughter even asked for a lot of veggie's in her lunch today because she over did it with the candy. On an interesting note: some of the towns here in Massachusetts had to delay trick-or-treating to Thursday or the weekend due to all the power outages! Never heard of canceling Halloween before!

Bathroom Inspirations for my Bathroom Remodel

Cute bathroom for kids or adults!

Planning on remodeling our master bath (which is way too small to even earn that title) and our main floor 1/2 bath. I have been gathering images and unfortunately don't remember some of or most of the sources I got them from. I hope you find inspiration here for your remodel project! This gorgeous bathroom below has so many interesting things about it. I think I will just list for each picture the things that stand out for me...

Love, sink and fixtures, unique lighting, towel hook, shower head, curved ceiling, tile and shower head.

Love the tile surrounding bath, towel bar, color of walls, flooring and lighting fixture.

Love, sink, cute floor tiles, and of course wainscoting, wall paper is very cute.

This bathroom is very unique, that is what I like about it.

I think for a small bathroom this is so special. I love that sink and the way they hung the mirror.

This bathroom is so unique using a long farm table for a vanity. Love the mirror and lighting fixture.

This is one of my favorites. I love the contrasting gray and the wall that hides toilet. The large mirror adds drama along with chandelier. Interesting use of stand alone shelves for storage which is always an issue.

This is also one of my favorites hands down! The mirror is gorgeous and I plan on finding something unique like this one for my 1/2 bath on main floor. I love the stone sink and the texture and sleek lines it brings to this design. Just wonderful and interesting.

My Photo Tour Of Boston Public Gardens

Are you interested in photography and would like to learn some history about Boston? Well, I am REALLY interested in photography and found myself immersed in an amazing experience of taking a Photo Walks Tour of Boston Public Garden. My friend, Beth, and I met with the Saba Alhadi, our tour guide. It was so much fun to learn how to compose the best picture from different angles and to actually use different settings on my camera (so excited about this). I really felt engaged in what I was doing and it was the perfect sunny day. The garden was blooming with flowers and was very easy to get a great shot. Spring Has Come To Nesting On Main

I periodically find myself driving to Concord, MA....one of my favorite New England towns. Of course, a stop in Nesting On Main is a must to see what beautiful vignettes and displays have been created for the season. The day was exceptionally beautiful and perfect to wander around and shop. Nesting On Main is a very inspiring shop to peruse. I always spot something I want! The wreaths below were created by Beth Hylan. She is so very creative and I love her designs!

I have to resist buying a topiary every time I see one!

Adorable town...

I did end up buying a tall vintage bell jar but have not found the best place for it yet. I also bought a large nest and placed it inside {and a branch from outside}. I was so happy with how it looked but when my hubby came home he wanted to know what that creepy thing was growing inside the glass {the branch looks like fingers}! Oh well! I still love it but may look for something else to display inside. I also may paint the base black. See my not so great photo below....

Magnificent Creature

This beautiful hawk was watching me....because I kept inching closer and closer. While we were working outside this past weekend, the hawk stayed in our yard with us all day! What would keep a hawk in one place you may wonder? Well, while I ate a sandwich in the kitchen and looking out my glass doors to the backyard, this enormous hawk came flying down and grabbed a squirrel! I was traumatized because this was all happening right on my back step! I felt so sorry for the squirrel but realized nature had to play itself out. The hawk eventually won and moved to the middle of my yard with it's prey. We still had much to do in the yard so we just worked around him. He was close enough to take pictures and to admire. I was truly fascinated! He wasn't bothered by us at all and regarded us with mild interest. He just stayed put! He must have been hungry...it was such a long harsh winter.

I will not show you the squirrel part!

My Very First Terrarium & How To

Did you ever come across something wonderful and you just HAD to replicate it? Well, that was me when I spotted a terrarium (officially obsessed)! I ran around yesterday gathering all the supplies and got to work. I love the results and next time I won't rush....I made three in under two hours because I was just so excited! I do that sometimes. It is definitely a rewarding project (can do with your kids) and hopefully my new plants won't die on me! Maybe terrariums help keep plants healthier?

I had picked up a beautiful heavy large glass piece at Home Goods for $7.99 (made in Poland). I have read that it is a good idea to have the opening smaller than the rest of the jar. I also stumbled across these adorable small jars for under $2.00 (milk jar and canning jar-see below too).

My Terrarium's New Home in My Sitting Room-Love it!

I wanted something whimsical so I was attracted to a small fern and some cushion moss that I found outside. I also picked up baby succulents for the smaller jars.

These were not hard at all! I love making terrariums and see many in my future! I will be giving them out as gifts too!

Things you will need:

Container- glass jar (waterproof & transparent)

1. Plants-different heights & various foliage colors ( I stuck with one as focal point)

2. Small stones-for drainage, enough for 1 inch layer (got them at Michael's Craft-small river stones)

3. Charcoal-to help purify the air when the terrarium is covered (I did not add this)

4. Potting Soil - I moistened the soil with water before putting in jar (if planting succulents-get proper soil for that plant)

5. Moss- I picked up bags of moss from craft store-Sphagnum (sprayed to moisten with water) and sheet moss. I also used Cushion Moss from my yard. I like the way the moss adds texture and a forest-y feel to it. I think it is my favorite part of the terrarium! I may just do one with only moss in it!

6. Long tools to move things or push things down in glass. I used a straightened out wire hanger

This is me making a mess in my kitchen. There was dirt flying everywhere! I think I need my own studio! I wish I had a MOMMY CAVE! A potting shed would do too!

Steps to make your Terrarium:

1. Place a 1 inch layer of stones in the bottom of your clean & dry container

2. Add 1/2 inch layer of charcoal ( I did not need to do this since mine was open)

3. Fill the container with about 2 inches of potting soil (slightly moist)

4. Arrange your plants on top of the soil

5. When you have found an arrangement that pleases you, gently plant making sure that the plants are firmly in place and supported.

6. Water sparingly ( I misted with spray bottle)

Care:

Place your terrarium in a spot where it will get good bright light and occasional sunlight. It is not necessary to have a cover, but you will have to check it every day to make sure it doesn't dry out. If you do need to water, use a misting bottle, spraying the top of the soil as well as the foliage. If you do have a cover, make sure the terrarium doesn't get too wet, as in dripping moisture on the glass or standing water on the soil or among the stones. Take the cover off if you find these conditions and replace it when it has dried out, possibly for a day or so. Should your plants grow too long or tall, most won't mind pruning or pinching. Watch for any dead leaves, remove them to ward off mold.

I think when I go away all I will do to preserve the terrarium is mist it before I go and cover the opening with plastic wrap to create a moist environment.

Upstairs Downstairs Series-Cannot Wait!

I am going to convert you yet into loving British Drama! Upstairs Downstairs is back but more grown up. I remember watching this series when I was younger with my mom. I am thrilled that it is starting up again with a fresh face or faces I should say. However, there are a couple of familiar faces. Do you remember Rose Buck (the housekeeper) played by the talented Jean Marsh?

Kitchen Inspiration {Love}

I have been pouring over kitchen images for a while now and one of my all time favorites is from the blogger Joan from For The Love Of A House. Her kitchen is so warm, inviting and timeless. They have been renovating a charming farmhouse in NH and are doing a beautiful job. One example is their kitchen. We are thinking of doing a minor facelift on our kitchen and I have found some ideas here.

I love the dark soapstone countertops and the beautiful veined marble island. I think we are going to take the plunge and go for the glass front Sub Zero refrigerator! We are just going to go for it! We have always wanted a sub zero but seeing Joan's kitchen with the glass front sold me! She loves it!

So cozy and charming...ikea chairs with a found antique table! Doesn't always have to be expensive! The chandelier she also found in pieces at Brimfield antique fair and restored it to it's true beauty.

The island is honed Bianco Venatino. So very beautiful! I thought it was Carrara marble but it isn't. I think I prefer this one! Gorgeous veining.

OK, my two loves...Sub Zero and Wolf range. I love the simplicity of the backsplash and hood above the range. Beautifully done.

I love all the jars lined up with ingredients!

Lark Rise Is Back {Season Four}!

So excited to report to all lovers of period piece movies, that Lark Rise to Candleford is back! Sorry to say though, that season four is the last one. I absolutely adore this BBC drama! I have seen all them except for this last season and cannot wait! I am going to pre-order it right now! When you watch Lark Rise, you really feel like you get to know the characters and {sounds crazy} miss them when the episode is over! So...you have to watch more...hours more {usually watch all episodes back to back}. You start to feel like you live with them....uh-oh, I really sound nuts now! The actors are superb and the scenes are beautiful. You will want to vacation there when you are done watching all of them! Life seemed so simple then and the people had amazing relationships with their families and neighbors. However, this series is filled with so much drama that you will not be able to get enough of it! Trust me...it is that good {the guy in the middle is looking a bit scraggily but I know I won't be disappointed}!

Lark Rise to Candleford is a bucolic valentine to 19th-century, small-town England, and all the characters that live there. This BBC adaptation of the autobiographical books by Flora Thompson is sumptuous and very well acted, and this fourth and final season follows the exploration of characters viewers have come to love in the first seasons. Julia Sawalha (Saffron on Absolutely Fabulous) continues to impress as a leading lady, playing Dorcas Lane, who acts as a mentor to the young protagonist, Laura Timmins. Moss And Mushroom Display {Spring}

I just opened an old issue Martha Stewart Living, April 2008, and went "ga-ga" over this arrangement! Moss and mushrooms...you cannot go wrong for a whimsical spring centerpiece! I have so much to do today and made myself a strict schedule so I can get everything done. However, I am tempted to just focus on finding cushion moss and creating this! I have to control myself! Instructions below:

Moss and Mushrooms How-To

Cushion moss is available from florists. If you use moss from your yard, return it to its natural spot after you disassemble the arrangement.

1. Line the vessel with plastic wrap to protect the surface, and then add some chicken wire for support.

2. Lay pieces of moss on top of wire, lining up seams and forming a mound.

3. Insert 1 end of a toothpick into a mushroom stem, and then insert the other end into the moss. Repeat with more mushrooms, varying placement for a natural appearance (avoid rows). Mist the moss daily. Mushrooms will keep 1 to 2 days, and moss may last several weeks.

Daffodils And An Irish Recipe

Grab a couple daffodils for around 5 bucks, pick up cabbage, brisket, bacon, potatoes (left out the onion) and you have got yourself a good ol' {is it ol' or ole'} Irish meal! This is what we are having tonight of course! It has been tradition now for some time. My daughter and I have already attacked the Irish soda bread---great toasted with butter! Please enjoy the recipe below:

CORNED BEEF & CABBAGE RECIPE

(via my sister Lori)

Note: Cook corned beef first since it needs a few hours...

Corned Beef:

Place corned beef in pot and cover with water, 1/4 inches over beef

Bring to a boil on high heat- simmer off foam (skim off)

Cook for 3 1/2 hours (can do longer-even 5 hours)

Ingredients

3 Lb lean corn beef brisket

1 Cabbage-green (are their other colors?) cut into quarters

2 Lg Idaho potatoes, peeled and cut 1/4 crosswise

12 Ounces bacon (lean), chopped -after cooking

2 Cups yellow onion peeled, sliced lengthwise

1 Tsp salt

1 Tsp ground pepper (sprinkle on all the cabbage pieces in pan)

2 Cups chicken broth

Heat oven to 375

In large baking pan, place cut cabbage round side down

Place cut pieces of potato in pan

In skillet fry bacon 7 min.

Add sliced onions till soft-about 5 min.

When done take onions and bacon with juices and pour over cabbage and potatoes in pan

Pour chicken stock over everything in pan

Cover tightly with foil for 1 1/2 hours or more (till very tender)

Let set out for 15 minutes before serving ( I hardly do this...we just eat!)

Serve with spicy mustard and of course Irish Soda Bread!

Natural Consequences

Winter in Massachusetts has sure taught me a lesson! Get the heavy snow off of your roof as soon as you can (professionally)-tried ourselves did not work! My lovely home has seen much damage this winter due to ice dams and snow. Our brand new gutter has been ripped off and shredded leaving us with a mess! Also, due to the ice dams, we have had significant amounts of water invading our home. The insurance adjuster told us we have about $20,000 in damage! This has been the roughest winter yet and I wanted to share my woes with you so that this won't happen to you. I do hear though that many people in my neighborhood have suffered the same thing. This happened a few weeks ago and that is why I haven't been posting...just not up for it with all this craziness going on. So, now we are going to prep our home to hopefully withstand another rough winter (if it rears it's ugly head again next year). I think living in California before moving here made me soft and totally clueless as to what is needed to get through winters here (even though I grew up in NY)!

{Ice Dam Damage To Wooden Gutters}

{Gutter came crashing down minutes after my Dad was considering getting up on a ladder!}

{The ice must have weighed over 100 pounds in each area to do this to my gutter! What we need to do to hopefully prevent this next year....place membrane under slate roof tiles to prevent water from coming in. Heating coils in gutters to prevent ice (not sure if that will do it). Insulate attic to prevent heat loss through roof. Install rails on roof to prevent snow from coming off in an avalanche! Soffit vents along edge of roof. I am not feeling very hopeful here!}

I am using visualization to get me to a happy place.....Especially since the power went out the other night and our sump pump failed and...guess what? Our basement flooded------AGAIN! Take me away!

It Is Magical, But...

This is magical....The joy of catching a snow flake!

Our house

This is our house in trouble! This, is NOT magical.... For all of you who live yearly in warmer climates, this is an ice dam. The worst thing that can happen to your house. You know why? Because now water is backing up behind this lovely dam and going under the shingles and into our home. Windows are filling with water and now....water is dripping into our downstairs sitting room. I have tarps and buckets to catch the never ending drips! The wonderful thing about this? Nothing. You really cannot stop it. My house is going through the "little ice age". Conditions in Massachusetts are ideal right now for this to happen! This is seriously stressing me out!

Our little pup, Maggie {this looks pretty magical}

Our poor little, no meat on her bones, dog cannot even go do her "tinkle-time" {that is what you have to tell her when she goes out, otherwise nothing happens}. Within a few minutes her paws have frozen and she cannot even walk back to the house. We have intricate mazes dug out in the yard just so she doesn't sink and disappear!

Yes, this is all very pretty and perfect setting for taking photos. However, I have had enough! So, this is my complaining post {I go through this crazy stage right about now every year}. My house is always freezing, our heating bill is through the roof, and we are expecting tons of more heavy freezing snow for Tuesday and Wednesday! What the....? My one saving blessing is that we have someone to shovel us out when it all piles up. This is a must! One year, I thought I could handle shoveling myslef {my hubby works long hours}. You know, I grew up in NY, so how hard could it be! One night, the snow came on so fast that I couldn't keep up! I couldn't do it! My husband came home late from work in all his nice dress clothes and could not even drive into the drive way! He then had to walk in knee deep snow to get to the side door! What a mess! I will try and hold on to the fact that there is still a "magical" factor playing out through this winter! I need to just make it till the spring! There is nothing like that day when you finally can feel the warmth of the sun, here the birds singing, and little flower buds popping out to say "hello" {that was very corny, I know}!

My Find...Mushroom Print

My newest find from the Salvation Army {only $4.99}! The mushroom print is one of my favorite inexpensive treasures! As you know, I am insane over mushrooms! There is just something about their shape, color and whimsicality {I looked this word up in the dictionary just to be sure I wasn't making it up, which I like to do}. I took the print with me to Michael's craft store and found a frame. I really did not want to do a black frame. It works for now. Eventually, I am hoping to come across an antique frame in the same color scheme as the mushrooms. I will hopefully buy more of these antique prints and would like to do a whole wall of them in my house. For now, I have placed it on my mantel. I do realize my mantel needs serious consideration for it is quite plain! I will get there eventually. Every time I look around, I am thinking of changing something or I need to put more character in a room or a corner. You know, it is exhausting sometimes to operate the way I do. I sometimes feel that I need to be more satisfied and move on. I, however, really do thrive on the "hunt" and being creative. Like right now, I am enjoying coming up with this post for my blog when I should be tackling the laundry....Seriously, I think my laundry has babies! It just keeps expanding and it never goes away!!!!! Agree?

Mushroom Stones!!!!! {Love}

My other love that has to do with mushrooms is Staddlestone/Mushroom stone! I have to own one or many of these one day! I have seen them for sale but have been unable to deal with how expensive they are! If I had even one of these in my garden beside my patio, I would be happy to stare at it every day! Whimsical Wall Mural + Chalkboard Paint

Hello everyone! Good Morning! I am so excited that I have come across this image below. I have been hearing from my daughter that she wants to paint one of her walls black (other walls, color still undecided). I have been repeatedly nixing (is that a word?) that idea for fear that it would be too dark and gloomy {although I wear a great deal of black}. There is a wall behind her headboard that would work for her idea....then...I came across this lovely chalkboard paint wall mural and bam! Problem may be solved. I think this is such a clever idea and looks absolutely charming! This also is in an adults bedroom so... it would work for sure in a young persons room! They used a large projector to trace the image with chalk. Almost looks too good to be chalk. I hope if we do this, it will look neat and pretty too. I have already discussed that I do not want this wall to have mish-mash of drawings ect.... That is the only way I will even think about attempting this! Problem is, a large projector? Where do you get that? Also, have no idea were this whimsical image is from! The quote on the wall is so true...."You'll never do a whole lot unless you're brave enough to try." One really has to be brave to decorate!

Frame It, Hang It, Make It Special...Your child's artwork

As I was working on this post, I was asking myself if this was just me {proud mom} taking an opportunity to show off how talented of an artist my daughter is.....However, I really did want to share how wonderful it is to show your children how much you cherish what they create. Frame it, hang it, and make it so very special. Give their art or creations a place of honor. It will inspire them even more! My daughter of 12 years took a very serious art class last summer and I had to get her work up on her wall for everyone to see. Hanging them up gives her a great sense of accomplishment and pride. They also gave a lonely wall in her room much needed personality...and it is original to boot!

I found these poster frames at Michael's craft store. These pieces of art were rather large so this was the best solution. {I think I hung the pictures a bit crooked...not the best at hanging art}

This photo was also taken by my daughter when we were at the beach on Martha's Vineyard, MA. I thought it was such a beautiful shot of the water and rocks below, I just had to frame it {I had it enlarged to 8x10 first}. I want her to sign it too. I think it is just amazing when you give your child the opportunity to create. Why don't you let them have the camera for the day? They really get into it and produce something wonderful. I think this photo looks amazing framed and we have it in our guest bedroom/office for family to see when they come and stay with us.

We cropped and hung this still life, by my daughter, in our small sitting room off of our kitchen. I love how art looks hung on shelves and really love showcasing this piece here.

Another piece she did that I just adore. I love the trees and the mushrooms are so cute! We framed it and have it hanging in our kitchen. I hope you are inspired to hang some of your children's art work! I plan on hanging more!

My Two Favorite Children's Birthday Cakes {Martha Mode}

The joy!

Periodically, I browse through all my photos from the past. It is fun to relive all the great times we have had. However, looking at them reminds me of how quickly the years have gone by. So, it is a little heart aching to see how much my daughter has grown and matured. When she was just a little peanut, I loved making her birthday a special day. I would get so wrapped up in the creative end of things! I have been know to stay up well into the morning hours baking and building one of these cakes you see above. It was well worth it to see my daughters reaction on the day of her party. My creations were a big hit! I did not have a blog then so my photos are not the greatest! If you would like instructions on how to make the 3-D dragon (dinosaur) cake, go here. I followed some of the directions and then improvised and added what I thought would make the dragon more appropriate for a girls birthday. The colored stones are actually candy! The theme was castles, dragons, and princesses. The castle cake was made with about 7 layers of cake, frosting, candy and glittered (edible) ice cream cones. We have all experienced when we are in "Martha Mode". You know when you are trying to make everything "just so" or even perfect. My cakes may not have been perfect, and I may have been running around like a mad woman creating these parties, but in the end I enjoyed my efforts! Too see how happy my little girl was made me so glad I put in all that effort. We will always have these great memories!

We made sure we had a jumping castle too! Cheesy, but the kids love it and I was able to build a whole castle/princess theme around the cake and the jumper! Those were fun birthdays! Enjoy!

You must own a topiary! I have a hard time passing them up when I come across one. I just love to look at them! Over breakfast this morning, I was enjoying the lemony scent and the earthy rosemary aroma...so heavenly! I have been trying to keep them alive due to the fact that I kill all my plants. I am really surprised that these two have lasted so long. I have been misting and misting and misting...I learned that they need that! Aren't they lovely? I think they are worth the investment. I've Turned Into The Crazy Bird Lady {with a great camera}

Do you see the sunflower seed in it's beak? The Black Capped Chickadee is the most enthusiastic bird at the feeder. They actually will wait close by me while I fill the feeder. A high energy bird and very busy. They chirp and chirp until I am done. These little guys don't like to eat at the feeder if it isn't full to the top! {Photos: Living It At Home}

Yes, that is my new nickname given to me by my husband and daughter. I have become the caretaker of these birds you see above. They visit my feeder everyday and have begun to consume large quantities of bird food! My husband wants to know when they are going to start paying rent! I have also moved up from the cheapo bird food to the supreme high nut content {expensive} food for them. You see, I have become very fond of them and get great pleasure watching them everyday. If something happens to their feeder, such as being empty, frozen or partially taken apart by those pesky squirrels, I run out in my PJ's to rescue it. Hence, I look like a wacky bird lady...with bed-head hair! Good thing we have great privacy in our yard due to all of our trees otherwise my neighbors would get a site of me looking like a cookoo bird myself! I love taking photo's of birds and I am getting good at sneaking up on them {I sound even more crazy now}. It is good practice for me because I have no idea how to use this camera {Nikon D300}. I love how these pictures have come out without having to do much but snap the shot {and some editing in iphoto}. Taking photos also satisfies my creative side along with sharing them on my blog. My Gorgeous iPad Case {Love}

I don't need to use many words to describe this DODOCASE for my iPad (just arrived). I think my photo's say it all. Well, I will say a few things! I absolutely love it! I have tried another case from the Apple Store but found it very lackluster and not attractive. This case, however, shows off the true beauty of my iPad (yes, I think iPads are beautiful). It is made beautifully and looks like a book too! It also feels very sturdy and strong. The DODOCASE is one of the most popular cases out there and won the MacWorld Eddy award and the 26th Annual Editors Award iPad case of the year. It is hand made in San Francisco (remember, I used to live there so I am excited about that) and they use true book binding techniques to create this sturdy case. Their philosophy is to manufacture things locally and keep the art of bookbinding alive by adapting it to a world of e-readers and iPads (how clever are they). They also have different color choices for the interior. It is easy to install your iPad too. Just gently place inside the bamboo frame and viola, your iPad is secure and looking so pretty! They also make a case for the Kindle e-reader. We are a Nook family and hopefully (I am going to write them) will make cases for the Nook too.

Right Brain Creative Type Gets Organized With Plastic {Not Typical}

Right-brain types are visually oriented. They tend to think in images rather than words, focus on the big picture rather than the details, and go through life in a somewhat seat-of-the-pants (a.k.a. scattered) way. Source Real Simple.

OK, that is me in a nut shell {I try though}! I have been reading so many organization articles recently and I am happy it finally is getting into my head on how to become organized. I have a million projects to do for this new year 2011! I definitely overwhelm myself thinking about it all. Our bedroom closet has always been on my mind and it was a mess! Without even putting it on my list for the day, I just walked in and starting taking it apart {I just had to}. I had not even removed our summer clothes yet! My one biggest frustration was how much dust accumulates on shoes, handbags, ect... After stumbling across the Container Store's clear shoe boxes, I knew I found something that would solve my problem. I couldn't wait to get over there and get busy recreating my closet {made a list first of what I needed}. I am officially obsessed now with these plastic boxes! They hold everything and no more dust or toppling items in my closet! Neat...neat...neat and only $1.79 each! I bought the box of 20 and saved a few dollars. You seriously have to try these for your shoes and other items!

By the way...here is some advice from Real Simple for right brainers {go here for more-also some advice for you left brainers too}

Right-Brainers
Forget about trying to adhere to strict rules. Your keep-it-neat plan should capitalize on your pull toward the creative and the emotional. Containers you already own and love can be motivating. Investigate your clutter patterns: Do you drop your necklace on the bathroom counter when you’re getting ready for bed? Maybe you need a wall hook by the sink to catch jewelry. If it works for you, it’s correct.

I love how my shoes look and fit into these boxes...I really am obsessed! Container Store even has boxes for boots! Seeing my boots here make me so happy!

My small handbags were always falling off the shelves and getting dusty. I love how nicely they will be stored now.

I have managed to even find a spot for my delicate scarves. I never knew what to do with them. I seriously am giddy!

I don't have the fanciest closet but it feels so much more organized now. I can walk in and "see" everything and everything has a home now. I am not a super organized person {remember? right brain creative type} however, I love it when I am inspired to become organized and actually accomplish the task! I still have more work to do in here though. I would like to replace all my plastic hangers with real wood and paint the walls. Oh, I even got some mens clear plastic shoe boxes for my husband {he does not like plastic boxes}. However, he loves how organized his side of the closet is now!

I hope this organization bug doesn't wear off! I am feeling really good right now about my closet project and the results. To keep it like this however takes work and maintenance. That means periodically eliminating items you no longer wear. Also, put back things were they belong...make sure everything has a place. I am feeling neater already!

Too Soon For Tulips? Our Happy New Years Eve

After a long week away visiting family for Christmas, it was really nice to come home and fuss about. Somehow I thought New Year's Eve was on Saturday and I would have a day to gather myself, unpack, clean and get organized before the New Year. After I said to my husband about ten times that I couldn't believe it was New Year's Eve on Friday, I ran out to go food shopping (cupboards were bare). I also needed some flowers ASAP for some cheer! These tulips felt so fresh and gave me a hint of spring. I hate to admit that I woke up that morning (Friday) excited for spring! It is only the beginning of our long winter and spring is very far away so I better get over it! I highly recommend filling your home with flowers during these long winter months. I plan on putting flowers in several rooms in my home, even on my bedside table. Flowers when you wake up? Just lovely...I will try and find some scented ones...

I think the reddish pink tulips compliment the antique silverplate vase perfectly!

For New Year's Eve, we kept it simple and easy. No cooking (whew)! I had to have candles to set the mood. We kept all the lights low and put on some classical music. We also had our fireplace going to make it even more cozier.

We had a lovely antipasto platter and an assortment of cheeses. Opened a bottle of wine, ate shrimp cocktail and just sat back and relaxed. It was the best night ever!

A view from my dinning room through the foyer to our living room where our chubby Christmas tree is. I did not do much decorating this year because we were traveling. However, it is nice to be home and enjoy our tree now. My husband asked me what are two things that I would like to accomplish in 2011...that would have to be, travel (Ireland and San Francisco-for now) and get a new refrigerator! Also, healthy eating and exercise...oh yeah, update and care for my blog better (have not been posting that much). It is exciting to "feel" like you can start fresh for the new year coming.

A {Tiny} Bit Of Christmas From Our House

I just have to face it....my decorating this year is just not up to par! There are only eight more days left till Christmas and I did not do everything I wanted to do. I have decided to be more like the victorian housewives {instead of the Boston housewives-wonder if they will do a show here}. Anyway, since the victorian woman had to make everything by hand they began at least three months in advance {I think}. This is where I need to be next year, starting in August! On average woman spend about 300 hours or 38 working days preparing for the festivities {source here}. I may have spent that amount of time thinking "I really need to get started". Shamefully, our tree isn't fully decorated. I will not be showing a picture right now because I hope to get to it this weekend!

This display on my sideboard I literally threw together in about 10 minutes. Good for now. My daughter made the sparkly red pine cones. Great project to do with kids and they make cute gifts as ornaments. Just buy red glitter, get some glue and get to work! Cute!

Pin Me {Sparkle For Christmas}

Presenting my small ever growing collection of sparkly things. I set up a little photo shoot for you to show them off. I know using natural light is the key in photography, so I placed them by a window. I have been learning that my house is just to dark for photos! Note to self... next home will have bigger windows or more of them for lots of sunlight! We also have 7 very old large Oak trees surrounding our home which provides much needed shade in the heat of the summer. My daughter has named our home Seven Oaks because we have so many. I like that we have named our home! It makes it sound so grand and old fashioned! Well, back to my jewelry. I have realized over the years that I really like things that sparkle. Thus, my attraction to these beauties below. The three lovely pins are vintage and very unique. Perfect for a statement piece on any simple outfit.

The very large round rhinestone pin I just picked up at a local consignment store. I was so excited to find it and it was discounted too! It is so beautiful in person and looks great pinned on a black sweater or even a cream one. It is done really well and picks up the light which makes it sparkle very brightly. Perfect for a Christmas party. We actually have one this week and I plan on wearing it!

Whenever I come across unusual vintage jewelry, I think that something great can be done with them. They are so unique and made well. I then came across Elva Fields. Emily Wheat Maynard scours flea markets for unique jewelry and produces these gorgeous necklaces from them. I seriously want one of these pieces. Most of my favorites have already sold out. They are one of a kind. Gorgeous! These are just some examples below. Enjoy!

Our Easy Christmas Decorations For Front Door {Side Door}

One of the best things I have ever bought {for outside} are my black metal urns. I use them over and over for every season. This festive display only took me about fifteen minutes to arrange. You can find the large red twigs and fresh greenery at your local nursery. To do these two containers cost me around thirty dollars. As far as a wreath, you don't need to get to complicated. Just pick up an evergreen wreath and tie a simple red bow on it. Now, there are years were I would like to do something different or more elaborate {like this year}. However, this display is the fastest way to get your front entrance looking good and you can move on to more important things...like gifts!

To arrange these decorations, it is really easy. First you start with dirt...you need that to hold everything in place. I like to keep the red branches bundled together in the middle. I usually tie them at the end with rubber bands and place them in the middle deep in the dirt. I then take each evergreen branch and stick them around the pot. The large pine cones you can add in anywhere. I think they look best clustered in a pair. That is it and you are done! I purchased all of these at Fran's Flowers in Natick, MA. Our side door decorations. Again, this was easy and simple. I picked up two small trees and just placed them in my urns. I then found some pine cones lying around outside and tucked them in. Done!

I just saw snow flurries today. Expecting snow by the end of the week? Already? I still have Christmas lights to hang outside!

Dinner Plates, Platters And More-FISHS EDDY In NYC

Have you ever walked into a store and feel like you have struck gold? Well, not gold but plates...oodles and oodles of them! We embarked on a quick trip to NYC to see the show Wicked on Broadway and had some time to wander around. Ended up on the subway to Union Square to go to ABC Carpet & Home. We then stumbled upon Fishs Eddy and never made it to our desired destination. The store was jam packed but utterly entrancing with all that it had to offer in dishware. I did not want to leave! We only had a short period of time and I wanted to so desperately to purchase something fantastic. There was so much to look at and so little time to enjoy it all that I came out with nothing! This was right before Thanksgiving, mind you, and any of these plates, platters, cake stands would have been very useful. I was in heaven at discovering this store! Luckily they have an online shop too.

What was really great was all the restaurant plates they stocked. These plates and serverware are unique and very heavy. I was carried away!

This vintage china section stopped me in my tracks. By this point, it was brain overload but in a good way!

NYC is so enchanting this time of year.

The hustle bustle of all the shoppers, visitors and locals brings a vibrancy and excitement to just being there. We came at a time when the Christmas decorations were just going up so I got a little glimpse at what is to come. We stayed at a beautiful hotel called The New York Palace. We were right across the street from St. Patrick's Cathedral. I felt like we were in the heart of the city!

By the time we had left the hotel they were finished with the Christmas decorations. Everything was so magical that I did not want to go! One night stay in NYC is not enough!

The Cartier store is as pretty as a package for Christmas.

The Fendi store was a shimmering beauty. The icicles were actually lights that simulated water dripping. It was stunning at night!

I hope you get a chance to visit NYC at this time of year. A bit crowded but that is what makes it fun and interesting. I think I will have to go back! I highly recommend the show Wicked. The cast was superb and very talented. The story of the Wicked Witch of the West was not what I expected (did not read the book)! It was worth every penny!

Getting Ready For Thanksgiving

Getting ready for the big day. It is important to get everything out and label each container or platter with a small sticky note. This way you will not be scrambling at the last minute for something to put the mashed potatoes in! I really like using a nice hefty container with a lid like pictured above. It will keep your food warm and it looks really pretty on the table too!

Vintage flatware pieces are a wonderful addition to your Thanksgiving table. I will enjoy using mine!

I am so happy with my brass candlesticks and white tapered candles! I found these wonderful candlesticks in various thrift stores. The most I paid for them is five dollars! I will be placing them along the middle of the table with the small white pumpkins laid out around them. It is a simple yet effective decoration. You don't need to spend that much to get a beautiful table. If you would like to see more on decorating with candles go here. The red and white transferware dishes are collected over the years from Home Goods.

This little antique beauty I scored for three dollars at a local thrift store. It is so perfect for my Thanksgiving table! It makes me so happy to look at it!

Last but not least...butter plates. I wish I had these and have been looking for them. I am so tired though of shopping and picked up some white porcelain ones from Macy's. They will have to do and are simple enough. They were only $2.50 on sale! Cannot go wrong!

I am off to go food shopping....the list is endless!

It's Simple...Use Candles For Thanksgiving Ambiance

Easy-Simple-Easy-Simple! Treat yourself and your guest to a lovely grouping of candles. Clustering candles together will give you that needed ambiance without going through much trouble. I will be hosting Thanksgiving at my home and I have to admit that I get caught up in the creative side of the holidays. Fiddling here and there with table settings or decorations for my buffet is how I like to spend my time. I know I should be cooking and shopping...blah...blah...blah! I love to make everything look pretty and unique. I think these images will work with what I had in mind. I don't think it will take me much time to pick up some candles, set them out, and light them!

Trina, over at A Country Farmhouse blog, uses taper candles beautifully in her dinning room. I think she is all set for Thanksgiving. It is the most pure and simple decoration for this season that I have come across. She always does a beautiful job with her photography and decorating her home. I was very inspired by these images to use candles to set the mood for our Thanksgiving meal. Her home is darling!

I keep using the word easy but, how easy is it to place all white candles on a tray in different sizes? Very effective. Do you have some pretty or unusual bottles lying around in your attic or basement? Get some gorgeous taper candles in different colors and just pop them in and you are all set!

Everyone always looks better with candlelight! If you don't have enough candles holders to use...head out to a local thrift store and pick some up! In the past, I have scored adorable brass candle sticks for one dollar! I actually feel a little better knowing that for Thanksgiving, my home will look beautiful and cozy by candlelight. Maybe it will even mask a burnt dish or too!!!!!

Rebecca Minkoff Bag Obsession

I officially went bonkers for a while searching for this bag is this carmel color. Being that the RM leather Studded Nikki Hobo bag was huge last season made it more difficult to find. They no longer make the bag! I was on all the "previously owned" sites and of course e-bay. Just when I started searching, someone snatched this bag in this color already. I was too late! How frustrating! I did however, purchase the same bag in a teddy bear brown color on ebay. Wasn't the best experience I have had on ebay and don't think I will be using them again in the near future for handbags. Anyway, I have the bag and have happily been using it. It is very slouchy and a great big hobo (I really like large bags). Don't you just love the blue and white lined interior? The gold studs are pretty neat to. In the dark color it makes them stand out more. I find it a little bit too flashy for me though but settled for what I could find! I really wanted the carmel color shown below! If I come across it again, I may just have to buy it! Now, don't everyone go running out to buy it! If you find one let me know! : ) Please!

Take A Look At Nesting On Main For Thanksgiving

Nesting On Main in Concord, MA is doing just the right amount for Thanksgiving. Many stores are featuring Christmas already and it is a pleasure to see all the warmth and wonderful textures for this season. Nesting On Main will close for a few days before Thanksgiving to decorate and prep their lovely store for Christmas. They will be open the day after and they are going to be all decked out in the best the holiday has to offer! I cannot wait and it would be fun to go the day after Thanksgiving. They have such a talent for making such interesting vignettes and beautiful display's. If you would like to see another post I did on them go here. It is one of my most favorite places to shop!

These rustic decorations are perfect for Thanksgiving. Grab a wreath and go!

They have an abundance of dried flowers and beautiful tall twigs.

Country wreath, leave it as is or add a pop of color.

I have an obsession with mushrooms. These dried mushrooms are sold in bags and would be great to add texture to any vignette or flower arrangement! I will be picking some of these up!

Russell's Garden Center in Wayland, Mass. has a very large department for Christmas decorating. They will make a custom wreath for you or flower arrangement. They do a really beautiful job.

Lovely large pine cones at only $1.50 each. These are the most affordable and make for a simple, elegant decoration. Check out Two Ellie's post at Mrs. French on decorating with pine cones. Below is a photo of Paula's dinning room over at Two Ellie. She used one large pine cone as a simple decoration on her beautiful dinning room table. Her mother has had that pine cone since she was a little girl. How wonderful and sentimental is that? I think her home looks absolutely lovely for this season.

I used to collect Dept. 56 Christmas In The City. The tall brownstone to the left is new. I would love to live in something like that.

Picked up one of these lovely rosemary topiaries. I usually get one every season for my kitchen. I eventually kill them though! Very unfortunate that I don't have a green thumb! Poor plant! I love the way they look!

I am coming back for this Norfolk Island Pine. Isn't it just gorgeous? I want to find an urn to place it in my kitchen. It is like a little whimsical Christmas tree. I will not be putting any ornaments on it. I like it just the way it is. Go here to see when I first fell in love with this pine and the lovely urns they are planted in.

"Don't Skip" Thanksgiving Wreaths

Gerard's in Lincoln, Mass has the most beautiful wreaths for Thanksgiving and Fall (above). Visiting his shop always puts me in the mood around this time of year. I know there is only about 2 weeks before we all sit down to a cozy dinner with family but, wouldn't it be nice to be greeted by one of these lovelies at the front door? It is easy to overlook the potential of making a welcoming impression right away by just hanging a beautiful fall wreath. Everyone moves very quickly on to Christmas and all the decorating that is required. Don't miss out on the warmth and textures that these wreaths provide. It might be worth the effort because you probably can preserve them to use next year!

If you get creative with wreath forms and hot glue, you can make any of these wreaths. The one above is my favorite.

Looking For A Chair...Is Always Fun

Chairs are like shopping for accessories for me! I feel like you can just grab one and take it home! I have done that before ya know! That is why I love my Honda Pilot! You can stick anything in the back! Anyway, these cuties have to be ordered. How fun is the Petite Bird Armchair above from Oly? Not sure if I am loving that fabric but this would be a fun whimsical addition in a unexpected spot in your home or maybe not...too much? Actually don't think it work in mine! Moving on!

I am currently looking for a chair next to my sofa and two flanking my fireplace. I am glad that there are so many wonderful choices out there! However, I think I have at least narrowed down the chair for next to the sofa. The O.Henry House slipper chair above will do the trick! So cute isn't it? I will be keeping the fabric simple. Actually daring to go very light...white? Scary!!!! The room is kind of dark and the pop of white will freshen it up...hoping! Also got that advice from a designer so I should be on the right track!

This Jackson winged chair from Hickory is what I am looking for to flank the fireplace. There are many versions of this chair out there now. I am really looking for a chair with height. The photo below shows my fireplace. The chairs in this photo are not there anymore and have been moved to a reading area. I am really looking for a taller chair for here.

Or maybe something with some wood like the Kirin Chair from Oly? DO NOT like that fabric or color so don't think that is the direction I am going. It would be a linen fabric for sure and maybe an oat color but on the lighter side.

"Fake A Healthy Head Of Hair" products that I am going to try

With the air becoming dryer and the heat constantly on, I am looking to make my hair behave and look healthy! Here are some intriguing products I came across that are now going to be in my shopping cart to give a try. The above product by L'Oreal claims that it is a restorative shampoo. It has ingredients that help to thicken the hair and temporarily seal split ends. It is a reconstructing shampoo that helps fortify the hair. This can't hurt to try! I absolutely hate standing in the shampoo isle trying to find a new product on the fly. There are just way to many with such fancy names and claiming to do this and that. Overwhelming! I end up just grabbing anything.

We are told to at least once a week to deep condition...right? I never ever have. However, this product above by Shu Uemura has caught my attention. The ingredients leave behind a smoothing film that hides dryness and damage for days. Oh, and also tangle-free! We all want smooth hair don't we?

Everyone's got them...split ends! The only way to get rid of those "stinkers" is to trim them. However, the White Sands The Cure 24/7 Hair Cell Renewal will hold the frayed strands together all day. Yeah for us! May help future breakage by lubricating wet hair before brushing, and preserving the cuticle. I am thinking I may not have to get my hair trimmed so much now! Hee-hee!

Did you know that the heat from a flatiron can crack your hair's cuticle? Ah, duh? However, the Remington Style Therapy Frizz flatiron is actually good for hair (didn't know burning your hair could be good for you...ever!). Supposedly its plates have a porous ceramic coating that emits a silicone-based conditioner that has been shown to eliminate frizz more effectively than a traditional ceramic iron. Sounds better than mine which burns and rips my hair out at the same time! I think this may be worth a try for me.

This product is a heat-protecting spray. Because when you use your friendly flatirons ladies you are scorching your hair at 410 degrees! A spritz of Tresemme' Thermal creations Heat Tamers Spray protects heat-tool junkies' hair with a layer of silicone. There is that mention of silicone again. It is in everything these days that has to do beauty. Regardless, interesting product if you are heating up all the time. I mostly air dry my hair unless I have a function to go to. Then it is burn baby burn to get it looking good!

Last but not least an at-home gloss! You can fake a shine (if you have horrible hair) with a gloss treatment in 20 minutes! John Frieda Luminous color Glaze Clear Shine gives a noticeable gleam that last for a week. This one I like the sound of! Well, next time I go to the store one of these is coming home to test out. anna karenina - gravity of love

When I have to start hunkering down due to the fact that it is colder and darker earlier, I turn towards a great period piece movie to get me through this tough New England weather (sounds crazy but it is true). Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy fits the bill (see video below). This is my absolute favorite version with Sophie Marceau and Sean Bean. A tragic steamy (oh yes, very) love story that I am sure you will enjoy and never forget! It was hard for me too! The strong emotions and desire for love is depicted beautifully in this film. Also the moral dilemmas that go hand in hand when you follow your heart and not your head. The chemistry between the two is perfection and you will be rooting for them wholeheartedly! Love, love, love this film! Many blissful hours to get lost in it while snuggling with a nice cozy blanket and a cup of hot chocolate! Can't help it, I am a period piece nut! {Warning: tear-jerker}.

Sean Bean here playing the dashingly handsome Count Vronsky. One can see why Anna could not resist his charms! His intense love for her will sweep you away! You will become a huge fan of his if you haven't already!

Sophie Marceau plays Anna Karenina. She is truly stunning in this movie. I think she portrays Anna beautifully and there are many moments where she doesn't even speak and you can understand how she feels just by the look in her eyes and her expressions. I found her acting very moving. I am including a video montage of Anna Karenina the movie from YouTube. I think the song by Enigma, Gravity Of Love fits perfectly because of its drama. The song also portrays the turmoil they face because of how strong their desire and love for each other is. Take a peak...you can still watch the movie later!

Halloween design above via me. My daughter is obviously very happy here because I have passed on my love of Halloween on to her. I think it is a good thing because it is such a great way to get creative. Getting creative is what makes you feel truly alive! If it gets your heart pumping than you are on the right track and doing what you love! The rest of the photo's below are from Martha Stewart. I really need to work for Martha! I think that would be a dream job. These images below are some of my favorites and I really have to try to do some of them next year. I hate when I say that..."I will do it next year". Usually two years end up flying by before I get to it!

With my camera in tow and my pup, we walked along beautiful paths enjoying this lovely fall morning! The trees are starting to shed their leaves in preparation for the winter. Teen Room Updates

Some updates for my daughters room. All selected by her. Well, I did see the Thomas Paul pillow on Gilt Groupe and fell in love with how whimsical it was. I then showed it to my daughter and she approved it! The adorable silver side table I found at Home Goods for $49.00, a great deal. I brought it home prepared to return it if she didn't like it-although I loved it and would have been heartbroken if she rejected it! I placed it next her Ikea chair and when she came home from school she was smitten! The other new additions are the Stockholm Rand rug from Ikea, the Ikea white slip-covered chair, and red Ikea velvet ottoman. She just had to have the red ottoman and insisted the black and white rug would work. I had my reservations but love how it all looks. Youthful and fun. Still not sure on wall color and for now we are keeping the soft lilac walls. Do you see all those books on her shelves? There is an expensive habit going on here! A good one for sure though! My daughter loves to read and has to own her books so she can add them to her vast collection. I think she counted around 550 or more! We are quickly running out of bookshelves which presents another design dilemma. She also has her own book review blog called Book Jacket. Stop by and say hello! She may have a book that a young person in your life may want to read. I have read some of them myself! Young adult books are not just for kids!

Her "to die for" antique bed. My dog looks very comfy doesn't she? To read more on decorating her room go here. Another idea for around her antique bed is to hang curtain rods from ceiling and hang colored sheers for a canopy effect. We will see!

Crows At Your Door On A New England Day

This is by far one of my most favorite Halloween decorated homes. I drive by every year and I decided that I was going to take a picture to share! It is so simple yet effective in casting an eeeery appearance at the front door. I love simplicity when decorating and this is the best example of it. Using the natural elements of nature, the branches, and the black crows (my favorite) creates a most striking front door display (having that great black door helps...love black doors). I have a question....is it proper to just take this photo and not let the home owner know that you are publishing it? I did remove the house number so I feel it is completely private. I do however feel that the very creative person that did this would probably enjoy that I am so interested! Maybe I will knock on their door and say "Hi! You don't know me but I have a blog and I love your home and did a feature on your decorations!" I don't think that would be to bad.

I am really enjoying living in New England right now. The weather and the fall colors are just amazing! While I had my camera, I went around snapping some photo's around town while I was running errands. I really tried to capture the colors. One can really feel inspired by all this beauty!

Some of the best foliage display is already fading!

The Little Things...

Having birds back at my bird feeder is making me so happy! See this little Tufted Titmouse flinging the food around? They have been eating so much food I have had to fill the feeder many times over! I seem to have more birds this year and they are really hungry (go here for more photo's). Getting fattened up for the winter. Is this an indication of how harsh the winter is going to be? I hope not! I know it is coming and Massachusetts winters can be tough and long, but, I am in denial! I am slowly removing my summer clothes and replacing them with turtlenecks and coats. I am creating quite a mess trying to get organized. I guess it gets messy before it gets better. I am already wearing my knitted Uggs almost every day now. Coziest shoe I own! Got them from the Walking Company. They have the most comfortable shoes!

Finger Lickin' Good...Ewww and Yum!

Are you trying to find that perfect treat to serve to your guests or trick-or-treaters? Severed finger cookies will do the trick! Warning: They look so real that they may run screaming from them! Seriously, I was so excited to make these and brought them into my daughter's first grade class (years ago) and the kids wouldn't touch them! The adults had a great time eating them though! I posted these last year and they are a huge hit so I am bringing them back! The best Halloween cookie I have ever made mostly because it is so effective! They taste yummy too! Make them if you dare! Recipe below...

Bloody Severed Finger Recipe

1 cup butter, softened

1 cup confectioner's sugar

1 Egg

1 tsp almond extract

1 tsp vanilla extract

2 2/3 cup flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

3/4 cup almonds, whole blanched (not sure what blanched means, I just bought "slivered" almonds for the nails)

1 tube red decorator gel

Preheat oven to 325

Cream the butter with powdered sugar. Mix in egg, and extracts until creamy. Sift and add the dry ingredients. Blend to make a soft dough. Wrap and refrigerate dough until it is easy to work with (about 15-20 minutes). Roll into a finger shape about 3" long and 1/2" thick (They will rise when baked so make them smaller than you'd like the finished finger to be). Place finger on lined cookie sheet. Using a butter knife, lightly press a flat nail bed shape at the end of the finger and cut 3 lines in the middle of the finger to form knuckles. Press lightly above and below knuckle to make finger more realistic (give it shape). Bake at 325 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool for 3-5 minutes. Put a bit of red gel in the nail bed and press the almond fingernails into the end of the finger.

*Arrange fingers on a nice platter, add some spiders to crawl over fingers. Try and make them as real as possible!

Whimsical Halloween Wreath You Can Create For Your Door

Spider Halloween Wreath Hand Made By Me!

What you will need

Large twig wreath from craft store (Micheals)

Black Paint

Black spray paint

White paint

Hot glue gun

Sponge for distressing effect

Wooden Halloween sign (mine says trick or treat)

Spiders (large, small, glittery spiders)

Cheese cloth

Halloween inspired ribbons (I used black, white and orange)

Glitter paint (Silver glitter)

Spider web for back of wreath

Orange fall leaves

White and black tulle fabric

Small battery operated halloween lights to string through wreath (optional)

Instructions For Spider Wreath

So now take all those yummy ingredients and get creative! There is no right and wrong, just lots of fun to do! First I spray painted the wreath black (let dry). Then I used a lot of hot glue to add decorations to the wreath. One suggestion is to put on those cheap plastic doctor gloves while aging the fabrics. I put a little bit of black paint on my gloved hand and mushed up the fabric between my hands giving it a decrepit look. I then tied it around different parts of the wreath tearing the edges for a better effect. For the sign, I distressed that with a sponge and paint by dragging it across. I also used glitter around edges too. I then embellished with spiders and leaves and whatever else looks creepy! I made this wreath about 6 years ago. It is still holding up well. It doesn't matter if it gets old and worn out looking, it just adds to its charm! I hope you take on a fun and easy project like this! (I have made others and may post them too).

Feed Your Friendly Birds!

Just a friendly reminder to get your bird feeders cleaned and filled with delicious seeds for your local bird population! I know she is not a bird, but sometimes I feel she is...kind of a like a chicken in a lot of ways! While outside cleaning the bird feeder I decided to do a photo shoot with a pumpkin and Maggie (she is the white fuzzy thing). She was pretty good at sitting {one of her best tricks she learned}. She is my little shadow buddy. Right there investigating what I was doing so of course I couldn't leave her out!

She really liked her new pumpkin friend!

I took this "peek-a-boo" moment last winter of this Black Capped Chickadee (our state bird). Don't forget about these little guys! They need our help in the coming months! Adorable! I am looking forward to photographing all the different birds that will visit the bird feeder. Just not looking forward to standing out in the freezing cold and snow to get the perfect shot! Creative Kids Costumes~Over The Years...

I find that just running in to a store and buying a cheap costume in a bag is really hard for me to do. I get really excited when I come across something...like a mask...and create a whole costume around it. It really isn't that hard and it is fun to get your child involved in the process. I hope you get some ideas from costumes we have designed and thrown together over the years! It has been great fun! Costume this year will be a "Spunky Alice In Wonderland". We are hitting the thrift shops for a unique dress, adding stripped stockings, ect... Should be interesting and we need to get busy shopping!

Raven Princess (above) was centered around this feathery mask. Items used...black old velvet dress cut up (even if it is too small, you can use parts of it), cheescloth (hurry sells out fast), and black netted spider fabric (fabric store), we added a black crow for her to carry too. This was fun to create!

Headless...cannot take credit for this one but thought it to be so fabulous and realistic!

Spider Princess and Ghost. Again, used black spider fabric, spider hat from dept. 56, black dress, black jewelry. For the ghost we used lots of cheescloth hanging over a white fabric that I cut up and made a whole in the middle to hang like a poncho. Cute ghost stockings we found at a store. I entwined spiders and bats throughout white spider webbing and drapped over costume. Black and white makeup on face for eerie effect! Having a missing tooth helps! Just don't pull one out for the costume!

The tiger costume, below, was store bought and came in one of those dreaded bags! This was before I realized I could actually create a costume. Still adorable though! Bat girl (right) I made from a black leotard. I cut purple felt and used fabric glue to adhere it to front and insets for ears. I used silver fabric glitter to add sparkle and detail. I also purchased black velvet and cut out bat wings and used the glue to add it across back and arms so when she opened up her arms she had wings! Also added a black feathered boa around neck line. Cute spider stockings we found at a store. Super cute!

Spider Fairy was easy using pieces we picked up here and there. Mask, wings, and wand we found at iparty store. Used a swag of purple whispy fabric to make a sash then hot glued glittery spider to front. Old black dresses that I could distress by cutting ragged edges. Black stockings and boots we already had too. Came out great! {Wreath in background I made, another story!}

Pippi Longstocking was a last minute decision. Floral wire in braids gives the effect that her braids are sticking out on their own. Freckles made with brown eye pencil across nose and cheeks. Dress and stripped stockings we already had!

This Japanese Princess costume, I love! My daughers idea completely! However, we purchased the umbrella ($5.00) and dress ($15.00) in China Town here in Boston. Hair up in little pony tails and eyeliner for effect. Stockings and boots we already had! Very happy with how it turned out!

Finally, Butterfly Girl. Wings and mask from iparty store. Black dress cut in jagged edges and black leggings. We did use little colorful butterfly's in her bun. Also sparkly makeup and a pretty clip on glittery butterfly for the dress. That's it and it was easy!

I hope I have inspired you NOT to buy a costume in a bag! Hee-Hee! Have fun!

A Cozy Fall Day At My House~"Living It & Loving It"

I am having such a cozy fall day at my house today that I just had to share it! The cold chill has finally arrived and I decided to light my first fire of the season. I love everything about it...the crackle of the logs, the warm glow, and the heavenly scent of burning wood. It was so mesmerizing watching the flames that I fell asleep for a while! So blissful and warm. I have slowly been decorating the inside of my home and I am just loving how it all looks. Fall really is my favorite time. My home feels so inviting I wanted to show everyone! Welcome! I do feel like I am "Living It and Loving It". I think if you spend a few moments everyday adding a little flourish of decoration or changing an arrangement, it is the best way to enjoy your home. Make it personal and decorate for yourself. Bring out something you cherish, like a silver pitcher and fill it with sunflowers (like I did). Grab some fall leaves and bring them inside. Pumpkins are an easy way to bring color into to your home. I even love using white pumpkins. I will be finishing up outside soon and post some photo's. Stay warm!

"Creepy Elegance"....I've Gone Batty!

Are we really here again...already? Yes, start your planning now! Just a friendly reminder to get movin'! Every year {after the wonderful Halloween night has passed} I say, to myself, I am going to do better next year or do more or start earlier! Fall is my favorite time of year and with it comes all the splendor of decorating for the season. This bat project was relatively easy and didn't require too much commitment. Kind of a last minute project I jumped at. I think it gave me the desired affect I was looking for to decorate my front door (yes, that is my front door and my daughter). I call it "creepy elegance". Even though it is only September 24, I feel like I am behind in my planning. Especially when you are looking for material for your blog! Since I am in Halloween mode now, I am going to try and do a weekly post on decorating for Halloween or the Fall season. I am going to see how it goes! It is such a beautiful time of year here in Massachusetts! I hope you are enjoying gorgeous weather wherever you may be! I am looking forward to seeing all the beautiful leaf colors!
